CHAPTER 11

The sun warmed them as West led Nolan along one of the paths through the vineyard. The neat rows of vines were stunning to meander through. They grew eighteen varieties of grapes, although only ten of those made up three-quarters of their harvest.

The other eight were used in a few specialty wines Andrew insisted on creating. Thankfully, those wines were starting to pay off for Twisted Vines. It had taken some time for West to get wine connoisseurs to give Andrew’s creations the attention they deserved, but all their hard work had paid off over the last couple of years.

Twisted Vines was winning many awards. But, more importantly, their name was becoming synonymous with a great tasting wine.

Hand in hand, West and Nolan wandered through the rows of vines, happy to just be together. “So, if you had such a horrible childhood in Dahlonia what made you return?” He asked Nolan after he’d heard about the constant teasing his lover had endured growing up.

Kids could be cruel. Hell, West hadn’t been much better. There were times when he looked back on some of his actions from his childhood and felt ashamed of how he’d hurt some of the other kids. He’d always thought by now they would have gotten over what happened to them, but with each word Nolan spoke, the bitterness and misery came through loud and clear.

He was starting to wonder if he should try to contact some of the kids he’d tormented and try to make amends. He’d hate it if they were still affected by something thoughtless he’d done as a kid.

The hand holding his gripped him a little tighter. “My dad died.” If West hadn’t been completely focused on Nolan, he probably wouldn’t have heard him.

His heart broke for his lover. He’d known Nolan’s father had died but he hadn’t realized when it had happened. To have all that heartbreak growing up and then to lose your father a few years later had to have been hard.

West stopped and pulled Nolan into his arms. “I’m so sorry, Nolan.”

He felt one shoulder go up and down in a half-hearted shrug. “It was a long time ago. I’ve learned to deal with it.” Even though Nolan acted like he was okay, he’d wrapped his arms around West and held on tight. “My mom couldn’t handle being alone and since my brother lived in Memphis with a wife and kid on the way, it was left for me to move back home and take care of her while she grieved.”

As much as West wouldn’t have wished any of that on Nolan, he couldn’t help but be glad circumstances led the shy, adorable accountant to their doorstep. He held onto Nolan. He’d wait all day long if he had to, to comfort his lover. But after a few minutes it was Nolan who pulled away and started them walking again.

“Is that when you applied to Twisted Vines?” He had to admit to being curious.

There was a smile playing along Nolan’s lips.
